I tend to inherit used furniture from various family members and since I am on a budget, I usually take them in. The newest item was this great chair, although it needed some work to look perfect in my home, but it has great bones! I went to the fabric store and purchased a few yards of upholstery fabric. Below I explained my DIY process:
What you will need:
1. upholstery fabric (yardage depends on how large the piece is)
2. can of spray paint
3. screw driver
4. staple or nail gun
5. scissors
6. old sheet or fabric (used to spray paint on)
Spray Painting Steps:
1. Gather the materials
2. Layout your old sheet/fabric (I prefer outside but a garage or
basement work well)
3. Flip chair over and remove screws from the cushion.
4. Now the chair is bare, make sure to dust and clean the wood.
5. Spray paint a thin coat, wait 15 minutes and add a second.
(sometimes you might need a third coat)
6. Let dry
Follow the images below to reupholster.
Need Fabric and cushion. I usually reupholster right over the existing fabric so it has more batting.
Measure the amount of fabric needed. Lay the fabric face down and put the cushion in the middle.
After the amount of fabric is established, cut the size you need.
Now start to lay fabric over the cushion. Make sure the pattern is straight and in the middle of the cushion.
Start to staple the bottom row.
Work on the corners next before you staple all the way around. These tend to be the hardest part, but you can always remove staples and start over.
Finish off by stapling all the way around the cushion making sure every section is stapled down. (Sometimes you might need a little man power!)
Cut the excess fabric along the edges. This will finish off the piece. Now screw it back onto the chair.
And Voila! You have a brand new chair (or so it seems!)
